The Christians have it all wrong. The greatest story ever told is that of Star Wars, and I think that this particular story has touched more generations' hearts, including my own. Also I think the story of Star Wars makes more sense (HA!!! BURN!!!!!). When the teaser trailer first came out, I almost couldn't handle it I was so happy. After a 10 year hiatus after Revenge of the Sith, we were about to pick up where the original trilogy left off, and not only that, it was being directed by J.J. Abrams? I was prepared for the best, and after having seen it, I can say with a full heart that I was not disappointed.
TonyWatchesMovies Score: 9 out of 10
This particular story follows Rey, a Jakku scavenger (not Tatooine, unfortunately, such an opportunity wasted) and Finn, a former Storm Trooper with the First Order who sees the atrocities on Jakku and flees to join the rebels. Quite honestly, both of them performed beautifully, but I think Rey (played by Daisey Ridley) did a particularly good job, so I'm going to gush for a second.
I don't believe any other woman could have pulled off Rey as well as Ridley did. Rey is by far the strongest female to ever grace the world of Star Wars, and she's competing against Princess Leia and Padme. Without any kind of training, she's able to resist the power of a sith master as he tries to poke around in her mind? The First Order might as well have dropped their guns and surrendered, and if not now, they're going to, because she's off to learn from one of the most powerful Jedi in the galaxy (spoilers, by the way). Daisey Ridley did an amazing job with her role, and I can't wait how she'll progress in the future as far as how powerful she will become and what role she'll play in the rebellion.
Something I've noticed while spooling through other people's reviews is that they were disappointed by the light saber fights, and to them I say, why? The lightsaber fights from the prequels always felt really floaty because they were just flapping their sabers all over the place like they were weightless, when in the real world most swordfights end after, like, 6 good swings before someone loses a limb or both parties get tired. In The Force Awakens, it feels like the lightsabers have weight to them, or like there's a consequence to being hit by one, and in that way I thought that the lightsaber fights were even more intense.
Something else I've noticed is that people think it's weird or lame that they put little easter eggs from the previous movies into the movie. I don't know why people think this is "cheap" or "they're trying to get a quick laugh", because I've always seen it as they're honoring the previous films by doing that. I see it like they're picking up the torch and continuing, but they don't forget what came before. A good example of this is in, I apologize, but Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull. In the warehouse you see the Ark of the Covenant in one of the boxes, but where other people would say "aw that's just for a cheap laugh", I saw it as a nod to the previous movies, and because I have seen that movie, I can laugh and remember what Indiana Jones is all about. I personally LOVED the little jokes throughout, and because I have been a true fan and seen all of the movies and enjoyed them, I can enjoy the Force Awakens even more.
There was one thing that I didn't enjoy, however, and that is Kylo Ren's childlike behaviour (Kylo Ren is the bad guy, for those who are curious). I understand that Kylo Ren is supposed to be that way, but OH MY GOD was it annoying. It's kind of like when you're at a relative's house, and one of your cousins or whatever brings a friend and he/she acts all high and mighty, and the second somebody tells him/her to stop what they're doing, they IMMEDIATELY start crying. I felt as though I was watching an adult version of that. I always felt in the previous movies that the Sith had their shit together, and that they were this awesome force in the universe that only the Jedi could confront, but here it just seems like if someone took Kylo's light saber away from him and told him to go to his room, his tantrum would go away after a good night sleep and some mac n' cheese.
That being said, I enjoyed Star Wars: the Force Awakens and can't wait to see the next one.
Cheers,
