The relationship I have with Tombstone is like one with a father, where there's some flaws but ultimately you love it too much to ever really hate the problems, and in a way it makes them more loveable because you appreciate it as a whole. Funnily enough, it was my dad who suggested this movie a long time ago, and ever since I've been re-watching it whenever I remember how awesome it was whenever I'm doing something not awesome, like at a doctors office or getting frisked by the TSA.
Why do I like Tombstone so much? Val Kilmer. He owned this movie. But not Val Kilmer specifically, it's when Val Kilmer, Kurt Russel and FUCKING SAM ELLIOT get together and make THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME. That's right. America's hero Sam Elliot is in this movie, and not only that but Kurt Russel is a badass and Val Kilmer is a silver tongued devil, quite unlike some of his other movies (see instead Batman Forever). The three of them together make this movie incredible, and on top of that, it's set in the town of Tombstone during the events of the O.K. Corral and the fall of the cowboys, so OF COURSE it's going to make the greatest western of all time. And remember this; I don't really like westerns that much. Seriously, only Tombstone and 3:10 to Yuma are the westerns I will watch because the whole cowboy aesthetic is something I find kind of dull and overplayed. "But Tony, you were obviously gushing SUPER HARD before, are you sure you don't like westerns that much?" Believe me, I'm sure. However, Tombstone is on a whole different level.
Let's start with the theme song, which is AMAZING. Doesn't top Hero, but it'll still keep my heart warm during a Siberian snow storm, along with other parts of my body. I'm listening to it as I write this review. Nothing gets my nostalgia senses tingling like a good theme, and nothing really brings together the feel of this movie and cowboy life in general than Tombstone.
"I said throw down boy." "Well Johnny, if you weren't my friend, I just don't think I could bear it." "I'm your huckleberry." Sorry, just remembering my favorite lines from Tombstone is all. And believe me, almost every line in this movie is quotable, and that means some devoted writers were behind this. My god is this a quotable movie, to the point where I can recite basically every line. Honestly, I'm sure that my childhood friends were incredibly annoyed by me and my love for Tombstone.
I don't want to spoil anything, because YOU need to see this movie, and you owe it to the memory of the old west to do so. And to Kurt Russel.
Cheers,
